A Legacy of Tradition: The History of the Owen Sound Fall Fair

The Owen Sound Fall Fair has been an integral part of the region’s social and agricultural calendar since 1852, making it one of Ontario’s longest-running fairs. It has grown and evolved over the years, adapting to changing times while remaining deeply rooted in its agricultural heritage.

The Early Years: 1852 and Beyond

The first Owen Sound Fall Fair was held in 1852, the same year that Grey County was incorporated. Unlike today’s fairgrounds, the inaugural event took place in the heart of the community at Market Square, where livestock and exhibits were displayed outdoors. The first fair was a financial success, generating £137 in levies and subscriptions to fund operations and £16 in profit after expenses were paid.

By the late 1860s, as the fair expanded, exhibits moved indoors to the Owen Sound Town Hall auditorium, while outdoor activities remained in Market Square. In 1894, under the leadership of A.G. McKay, a young lawyer who later served in the Ontario Legislature, the fair saw major developments. A grandstand and two-story pavilion were constructed, shifting the fair towards the entertainment and competitive events that continue today.

Innovation & Growth in the 20th Century

With the addition of a Manufacturers' Building, a Poultry Hall, and a Machinery Hall, the fair became more than just an agricultural showcase. Unique and thrilling entertainment became a major draw, including a race between an ostrich named Black Diamond and a local racehorse, and even a snake eater performance.

During this time, the fair was more than just an event—it was a social tradition for the entire community. Schools would close for the fair, allowing students to proudly display their projects, and farmers would gather to compete for prizes, share ideas, and connect with neighbours.

The Grandstand: A Symbol of Tradition

One of the fair’s most recognizable structures, the Grandstand, was originally built in 1894 but was tragically lost in a fire in 1948, along with three barns. The Owen Sound Agricultural Society quickly rebuilt a stronger, metal and concrete structure in the early 1950s, ensuring a space for generations to enjoy horse races, tractor pulls, truck pulls, and demolition derbies.

In recent years, the Grandstand has faced deterioration due to time and weather. After a Monster Truck event in 2019, structural concerns were identified, and necessary repairs were planned. The Grandstand was fully refurbished with the help of the team from Graham's Construction in Owen Sound. The work was completed just in time for the 2023 Fall Fair. Then, on May 6, 2024, another fire damaged the underneath structure and one end of the seating area, marking a significant setback. However, just as in the past, the Agricultural Society remains committed to restoring and revitalizing this historic structure, ensuring it remains a centrepiece of the fair for years to come.

The Fair Today: Keeping the Tradition Alive

Despite challenges, the Owen Sound Fall Fair continues to thrive. The fairgrounds, now located at Victoria Park, are home to a packed schedule of events, including livestock competitions, homecraft displays, truck and tractor pulls, live entertainment and much more.

After adjusting due to the pandemic, we are excited to bring back a third day in 2025, allowing even more time for agricultural showcases, family fun, and community engagement.

Looking to the Future

While fall fairs across Ontario face increasing challenges, we believe that the Owen Sound Fall Fair remains a vital part of our community. From its humble beginnings in Market Square to the large-scale event we know today, the fair has always been about celebrating agriculture, bringing people together, and creating lasting memories.

As we prepare for the 173rd Owen Sound Fall Fair on September 4-6, 2025, we invite everyone to be part of this historic event—whether as an exhibitor, competitor, sponsor, volunteer, or fairgoer.

Together, we can keep this tradition alive for future generations.
